The Long-Term Effects of the Corona Virus

Long-term consequences of the Covidvirus have become apparent. The people who have shielded themselves are now feeling more vulnerable, and are afraid to venture out in busy places. This is especially true since the number of cases has increased. Even those who have milder attacks of the virus may experience recurrent illnesses, post viral fatigue and bronchial complications. It may take several months for strange symptoms like fatigue, coughing and difficulty breathing to disappear. I’ve been tired and breathless since months.

After months of strict isolation, my brother has developed clinical depression. I am sure that many other people are also suffering. Then there is the sadness caused by the loss of family and friends. It has been experienced by thousands in the United States and around the world.

In the beginning, there were a lot of deaths in nursing homes. Hopefully lessons have been learnt in case a second wave occurs this winter. The virus will have torn families apart, and children may have also lost their parents or grandparents.

The virus’s financial destruction is also a major cause of depression. Loss of income, due to the loss in jobs. Fear and uncertainty. Many people have not qualified for government financial assistance despite the support that has been provided. Homelessness will increase as a result.

They are people, real people. These statistics are not abstract. There are actual individuals who have spent their entire lives working to support their families. Many will be struggling to maintain their businesses. Many will end up committing suicide because they can’t take it anymore. The financial crisis which could occur on a global scale is unimaginable.

The divorce rate is on the rise as previously tense relationships have broken down under lockdown, and then the financial strain that follows. The numbers are expected to grow by four times in the next few months. The food-banks struggle to keep up with an ever-increasing number of people desperate to feed their family.

As hospitals are being taken over by Covid, waiting lists for medical treatments such as cancer treatment and other issues continue to grow.

What can we do as a community to prevent the second winter wave of this virus? Be serious about wearing masks, washing your hands and avoiding social contact. Follow the rules, and don’t behave selfishly like some do at raves or parties. We can only benefit from the new normal if we act quickly to reduce its spread.

It has been difficult for some to cope with the loneliness and isolation of recent months, especially those who are alone or shielded and cannot visit their family members in hospitals. It is important that we all remain vigilant, and adhere to the guidelines and rules.
